The President of Romania Traian Basescu announced yesterday that he wouldn't promulgate the law on the election of deputies and senators, although PM Calin Popescu-Tariceanu took responsibility to promote it yesterday in the Parliament. The President argued that the referendum to be held in November 25 was not to be influenced by pressure coming from a law that existed already. He mentioned: "The referendum is necessary because there are very many flaws in the law and it doesn't settle the restructuring and reform of the political class". He announced he had sent a letter to the PM, asking that the polling stations for the election of MEPs and the referendum should be common. He invoked the fact that in the 2004 Euro-elections 9 of the EU newcomers had had one more kind of scrutiny at the same time”.
